It’s one of the hardest decisions a band or songwriter can make - send their own music direct to radio, press and blogs or employ a PR to do same. What’s the right pathway? This panel discusses self-PR versus engaging with indie PR companies from perspective of artist, PR, and press.
Brian Coney is a writer, DJ, musician, band manager and promoter based in Belfast. Previously an editor of AU Magazine, he co-founded and edits Irish music and culture publication The Thin Air. If he’s not scribbling words for the likes of The Quietus, Bandcamp, Clash, the Guardian, Dazed, Consequence of Sound, DJ Mag, Rolling Stone, Drowned In Sound, Noisey or elsewhere, he’s probably listening to Philip Glass.
Shauna Tohill is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter from Belfast, currently based in London/Bristol. She is the lead vocalist and guitarist in the high energy pop rock duo, REWS. As a session player, she has performed as a vocalist for Snow Patrol and bass guitar for Darwin Deez amongst others and as a songwriter, she has written music for various projects including the theme track for NI tourist board campaign 2014-2016 & Mencap charity projects.
Lyndon Stephens heads up Belfast based management company Champion Sound and label Quiet Arch. In the past four years they have had no less than 15 albums shortlisted for the Northern Ireland music prize and have won it twice. Lyndon also works with Help Musicians as a mentor on their 3 for 3 programme. They also run a monthly podcast called summit which decodes the modern music industry at a grass roots level.
